The most popular browser was most likely Internet Explorer, but Netscape Navigator was popular before the release of Internet Explorer. By being a free browser, Internet Explorer overtook Netscape, forcing Netscape to become freeware before eventually losing all of their popularity. Mosaic was the first browser ever created, too.
GeoCities was a free way to host websites in 1998 developed by Yahoo!. It was one of the most popular ways to have your own spot on the web. Unfortunately, it was shut down by Yahoo! in 2009, removing 38 million pages after the shutdown.
